Catching Off The Grid

June 12th, 2008

Last time, I talked about an exciting development in wind power, one that could egest a lot of the variability from wind power itself. The theory is, as you climb up up above sea level, winds are more changeless–presumptively since there are fewer and fewer windbreaks to interrupt and diver the wind, one fo the reasons that traditional wind turbines are placed on shorelines and windward mountain slopes. Tethered lighter-than-air turbines foreshorten the geographical limitations, which could be a boon to neighborhood and co-op power generation, while too providing a more regular source of energy. But the predictability of the power is the key. While the more uttermost activists might be all right with hustling blackouts or virtually-zero power consumption at all, it’s not naturalistic as a sell to the modal American. Similarly, many of the services that folks have come up to look on are not blending in to contend easily with those kinds of extremes. But furnishing power to them, fresh power that doesn’t come from polluting coal or controversial atomic needs something more regular than varying wind and solar. One idea that’s been kicked around quite a bit is delivering surplus peak energy from these sources to use during low-toned-output hours. Hydrogen fuel cells have been talked over, and are in bounded use in Japan right at present, but batteries are too an option, specially if their capacity can be increased while sliming weight and expense. Weight, specially, is an obstacle to good electrical vehicles, but lightheaded, inexpensive, and more effective batteries can besides intend the difference for greenish building and microgeneration applications. One company seems to be bing active ahead with batteries, practicing examined Lead-Acidulent technology, but besides trying to dramatically tighten the amount of Lead practiced, too creating the batteries secure. Lead-Virulent batteries are the battery of choice in the auto industry for stock vehicles and are prized for their durability and foresighted life; playing greater efficiency to that industry–and likewise leaving a home energy storage solution in the meantime–could leave a monolithic boon to alternative energy and greenish building. Right at present, the betterest way to see that Americans are living within their carbon footpprint, of course, is to accept them off the grid wholly. That will be (excuse the pun) the acerb test for energy efficiency and alternative energy programs. Only if when they start up to draw in that direction can we start to severely valuate the viability of important energy use reduction.
